Modules or disciplines:
- Civil Engineering Design 1A
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to graphical skills and basic sketching for engineers, basic IT skills and professional communication. Central to this module are design projects that enable students to build engineering knowledge and a lexicon around the various civil engineering disciplines.
- Engineering Chemistry 1A
The purpose of this module is to provide students with foundational knowledge of chemistry applicable to engineering. Students will focus on the fundamentals of matter and bonding between elements. This is expanded to include the basics of chemical equilibrium, thermodynamics and the effect of acidity or basicity on materials.
- Engineering Mathematics 1A
The purpose of this module is for students to develop a strong foundation in mathematics. Mathematical methods and concepts will be developed to mathematically describe and solve basic engineering problems.
- Engineering Physics 1A
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the fundamentals of physics, which is an important element of many engineering applications. The knowledge developed in this module will form a foundation for the engineering sciences and their applications.
- Society and Practice 1A
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the history of engineering and to develop essential skills, including collaboration, communication and critical thinking skills for engineers. It also introduces the context of sustainability challenges within engineering.
- Civil Engineering Design 2A
The purpose of this module is to develop students' intermediate engineering drawing skills, graphical representation abilities, and refined technical communication and report writing skills within the framework of typical civil engineering practices and projects.
- Engineering Materials 2A
The purpose of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the fundamental concepts of materials used in engineering projects. Furthermore, it will guide students as to the behaviour, suitability, and sustainability of construction materials.
- Engineering Mathematics 2A
The purpose of this module is to round off students' knowledge and application of mathematics.
Mathematical methods and concepts will be further expanded to enable students to mathematically describe and solve intermediate to advanced engineering problems.
- Engineering Mechanics 2A
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to solid mechanics theorems and concepts relating to the strength of materials.
- Society and Practice 2A
The purpose of this module is to further develop students' knowledge of the history of engineering and its evolution. It builds on the legal frameworks, accounting principles, professional skills and the philosophy of sustainable development, including the impacts of engineering materials.
- Civil Engineering Design 3A
The purpose of this module is to enhance students' design and drawing skills as an interdisciplinary communication tool, for communicating data in research, forensic report writing and writing specifications. Central to this module are design projects that focus on designing for sustainable development of civil engineering systems using industry-standard software tools.
- Geotechnical Engineering 3A
The purpose of this module is to progressively introduce students to the physical responses of soils under short- and long-term loads. It further exposes students to the concepts of shear strength, and subsurface exploration, of soils.
- Rural and Urban Infrastructure 3A
The purpose of this module is to familiarise students with the strategic decision-making, planning, and development processes involved in urban and infrastructure management, particularly focusing on transportation systems. This involves familiarising students with techniques such as data collection, analysis, and modelling of traffic and human movement patterns, spanning from a macro (national scale) down to a micro (city) level. Moreover, the module emphasizes understanding the broader impacts of these decisions on both socio-economic dynamics and the natural environment
- Society and Practice 3A
The purpose of this module is to introduce students to material standards and testing, and to further expand on law applicable to engineering practice. Furthermore, it introduces students to the holistic design of engineering structures for sustainable development.
